Bike Fit

If you have questions, and would like to schedule a fitting, please call Dr. Robert Schmidt at 360-704-7276 or email robert@proactivesportsmed.com

Bike fitting and pedal stroke analysis are completed by a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy, Dr. Robert Schmidt, who also competes in triathlons. Because he has extensive education in joint and muscle dysfunctions, bike fitting mechanics, and proper pedaling he can provide a medical, biomechanical bike fit that will improve your performance and/or reduce injuries/discomfort.

The software used will identify left/right leg percentage power splits and give you instant feedback needed to adjust pedaling evenly during the cycle.

Your Personal Bike Fitting includes assessment of mountain, Road, Triathlon, Spin/Fitness, Track or Time Trial Bikes. It covers all components of cycling: performance, equipment, the pedal cycle, & aerodynamic position.

Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome!

Frequently Asked Questions

We use the person’s current bike and fit them in the most effective position for proper cycling. We talk about everything, including:

  • Pedal-shoe interface
  • Seat height (fore/aft)
  • Cockpit sizing (handlebars, brake controls, gear controls)
  • Bar/stem height, length, rotation
  • Hood placement
  • The aerodynamic position
  • Proper Pedaling Mechanics–how to efficiently and effectively pedal, so the power will be transferred to the pedals.

Yes, we talk about all of the following equipment:

  • Shoes
  • Orthotics/inserts
  • Shorts/Shirts
  • Helmets
  • Eyewear
  • Gloves

Currently in the Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater area, we are the only bike fit being completed by a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). This professional has years of orthopaedic experience who can not only put the person in the most efficient biomechanical position, but can diagnose the nature of the problem and make corrections for it.

We do not carry any “on hand” stock. We can refer you to a bike shop for appropriate equipment needs, but we do not order equipment for bikes.

No. Unfortunately bike fitting is an out-of-pocket expense, unless the person is a professional cyclist or triathlete.

Yes. Your bike fitting is performed by a licensed physical therapist who is skilled at determining and correcting problems. We will discuss how force is applied effectively and recognize improper or ineffective styles, and the typical injuries which may result. In the case someone still has problems, we will modify the fit to meet the individual without compromising the laws of mechanics.

Dr. Robert Schmidt graduated with his Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Saint Augustine in 2003. He has been a cycling enthusiast for over 10 years. He has been competing in triathlons for the past year. He has completed advanced training in orthopedics and biomechanics of cycling.

The bike fit will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes at our West Olympia Clinic (2964 Limited Lane NW, Suite A. Olympia, WA 98502).

We will discuss and teach the proper biomechanics of pedaling. Most people take the push down, pull up method of pedaling, which is incorrect. We will discuss which muscles contract and when they should be activating.

We will also put the person on a CompuTrainer and show them how they are cycling and try to make corrections for improper pedaling. The CompuTrainer has shown to improve cycling power by as much as 20-30% and speed 2-4 mph. With the CompuTrainer programs, we can increase power, efficiency, and torque. It also shows the difference between left and right leg percentage power/work and will identify “flat” or “dead” spots in the pedal stroke where optimal power is not transferred to the drive train.

For more information on the CompuTrainer click here.

No. This is not a referral for physical therapy services. This is not for rehabilitation services.

The current cost for one initial bike fit is $125. This is for the bike fit and pedaling instruction for one (1) bike. If later adjustments need to be made after the initial bike fit, price will be determined based on time required.

We would like you to pick which bike you ride the most and we will fit it in the 90 minute appointment. Robert will discuss options regarding other bikes at that time.

All ages will benefit from a proper bike fit and proper pedaling instruction. Under 18 years of age will require a parent or guardians permission.

No. So please be sure all your equipment is in working condition.
