The ProActive SportsMed team is very excited about the second round of testing for our ACL Risk Reduction Program and Study. Our ACL Risk Reduction Program and Study was developed by our Physical Therapists and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists. This program is intended to identify high school female athletes at a higher risk of ACL injury and supply them with an intervention focused on their specific area of strength deficit or motor control to help reduce their risk.

Female athletes who participate in cutting and jumping sports are 5 times more likely to injure their ACL than the male athlete. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is one of the four major stabilizing ligaments in the knee. It is one of the most common injured knee ligaments and is typically treated through surgical reconstruction. Recovery from the reconstructive surgery is generally 9 months or longer.

Female athletes commonly present with neuromuscular imbalances and improper mechanics, placing the athlete at more risk for injury. Specialized training and intervention can help improve core stability, knee control, hip strength, and stopping or cutting mechanics. Inherent risk factors such as hormonal changes, pelvic bony alignment and joint laxity cannot be altered through intervention.

The ProActive SportsMed ACL Risk Reduction program involves motion capture video analysis to asses jumping, stopping and cutting mechanics and control. A postural assessment is done through the video analysis also. Therapists also complete a hands-on evaluation to document flexibility, range of motion, and spinal alignment. Therapists analyze the video footage for all athletes being tested to evaluate the athlete’s risk factors and areas of deficit. An individualized home program is given to every athlete along with an analysis of testing and areas of risk factors. Higher risk athletes are invited to participate in a 6 week training program, but all athletes can attend for a small fee.

Participation in testing is at NO COST and ALL participants receive a complimentary individualized analysis and home program.

Please join us for an information night on May 16, 2012 at our Tumwater Location. Our next testing for Fall sports will be June 2, 2012. You can sign up for a testing time slot at the information night or by contacting us.
