1. What is OUR bike fitting?

We use the person's current bike and fit them in the most effective position for proper cycling.  We talk about everything, including:

            Pedal-shoe interface

            Seat height (fore/aft)

Cockpit sizing (handlebars, brake controls, gear controls)

            Bar/stem height, length, rotation

            Hood placement

            The aerodynamic position

Proper Pedaling Mechanics--how to efficiently and effectively pedal, so the power will be transferred to the pedals.

2. Do we talk about equipment? (Aside from the bike equipment mentioned above)

We talk about all of the following equipment:

              Shoes

              Orthotics/inserts

              Shorts/Shirts

              Helmets

              Eyewear

              Gloves

3. How is our fit different from the bike shop?

Currently in the Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater area, we are the only bike fit being completed by a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). This professional has years of orthopaedic experience who can not only put the person in the most efficient biomechanical position, but can diagnose the nature of the problem and make corrections for it.

4. Do we carry equipment for sale here?

We do not carry any "on hand" stock.  We can refer you to a bike shop for appropriate equipment needs, but we do not order equipment for bikes.

5. Is this covered by insurance?

No unfortunately this is an out-of-pocket expense.  Unless the person is a professional cyclist or triathlete.

6. If I have a particular problem (i.e. numbness in the toes) will it be addressed?

This is the reason this fit is being complete by a licensed physical therapist.  We will discuss how force is applied effectively and recognize improper or ineffective styles, and the typical injuries which result.

In the case someone still has problems, we will modify the fit to meet the individual without compromising the laws of mechanics.

7. Who is the person completing the fit?

Dr. Robert Schmidt graduated with his Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Saint Augustine in 2003.  He has been a cycling enthusiast for over 10 years.  He has been competing in triathlons for the past year.  He has completed advanced training in orthopedics and biomechanics of cycling.

8. How long will it take and where?

The bike fit will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

Location:  West Olympia Clinic.  2960 Limited Lane NW, Suite B. Olympia, WA 98502.

9. What will I learn about "Proper Pedaling Mechanics"?

We will discuss and teach the proper biomechanics of pedaling.  Most people take the push down, pull up method of pedaling, which is incorrect.  We will discuss which muscles contract and when they should be activating.

We will also put the person on a CompuTrainer and show them how they are cycling and try to make corrections for improper pedaling.  The CompuTrainer has shown to improve cycling power by as much as 20-30% and speed 2-4 mph.  With the CompuTrainer programs, we can increase power, efficiency, and torque.  It also shows the difference between left and right leg percentage power/work and will identify "flat" or "dead" spots in the pedal stroke where optimal power is not transferred to the drive train.

For more information on the CompuTrainer go to:

10. What do I need to bring?

          (All are recommended)

          One (1) bike

          Cycling shoes

          Cycling shorts (not required)

          Cycling gloves (not required)

11. What types of bikes do we fit for?

          We fit for all bikes:

              Road

              Mountain

              Triathlon

              Cyclocross

              Track/Sprint

              Time Trial

              Spinning Bikes (gym spin class)

12. Do I need a referral to see the Doctor?

No.  This is not a referral for physical therapy services.  This is not for rehabilitation services.

13.  What is the cost?

The current cost for one initial bike fit is $125.  This is for the bike fit and pedaling instruction for one (1) bike.  If later adjustments need to be made after the initial bike fit, price will be determined based on time required.

14. What about being fitted for several types of bikes?

We would like you to pick which bike you ride the most and we will fit it in the 90 minute appointment. Robert will discuss options regarding other bikes at that time.

15. Is there an age limit for bike fitting?

All ages will benefit from a proper bike fit and proper pedaling instruction. Under 18 years of age will require a parent or guardians permission.

16. Do you complete bike repairs (flat tires, chain lubrication, tire changes, etc.)?

No. So please be sure all your equipment is in working condition.

If you have questions, and would like to schedule a fitting, please call Dr. Robert Schmidt at 360-704-7276 or email to bike@proactivesportsmed.com
